How sport helps me overcome anxiety
Life as a midlife woman is a constant battle between mind and body with hormonal changes playing havoc my body and mind. So, to help overcome my anxiety, 8 years ago I decided not let age get in the way of my adventures and I started to take part in some of the worlds toughest endurance sports....
In the the summer of 2023 brought some of my toughest challenges when I tackled monster Alpine climbs—including the Galibier and Alpe d’Huez—and completed the infamous Marmotte Gran Fondo. I pounded the streets of Youghal for Ireland’s Ironman 70.3 and competed in the heat of Valencia’s inaugural Ironman 70.3.
Each event tested my resilience. During the Col du Galibier climb, I looked up and thought, "How will I ever reach the top?" The swim leg of Ireland’s Ironman threw relentless Atlantic waves at me, pushing me to dig deeper into my reserves of courage and determination.
Overcoming obstacles
Endurance sports constantly push me beyond my limits, both mentally and physically. There were moments during these races when I questioned my sanity, but I never gave up. Through sheer grit, self-talk, and determination, I crossed every finish line.
Endurance sports mirror life: they are not easy, but they are incredibly rewarding. Each challenge I overcome strengthens my resolve and builds the emotional resilience and mental fortitude I carry into other aspects of my life, including managing anxiety.
My why
Endurance sports bring calmness and structure to my busy life. Training not only pushes my mind and body but also instills discipline and resilience. These adventures are a cherished part of my 50s, proving that age is no barrier to achieving greatness. Every step, meter, and minute of progress reinforces my belief that we’re capable of more than we imagine.
